Ask a shop what parts washer fluid costs and you get the price of a pail. That is the cheap part. The bill for a bath change is mostly the two things nobody quotes you up front.
Start with the detergent, since it is the number people do know. It is sold as a concentrate, so the pail price is not the tank price. Published US prices for the mainstream aqueous detergents work out around $1.50 to $4.25 per gallon of made-up bath, powders at the low end and branded liquid concentrates at the high end. Charging 30 gallons costs $45 to $130.
Disposal is usually bigger. A spent bath carrying oil goes out with a licensed hauler, and the rate schedules that are public put a 55 gallon drum of oily water or treatment grade wastewater at $130 to $205, before manifest fees, stop charges and surcharges. Figure $150 to $250 for a routine non-hazardous bath, and more if it fails a characteristic test. Rates swing hard by state and by waste profile, so the number worth trusting is the one on your own invoice.
Then there is the time it eats. The tank has to cool before anyone opens it. It gets pumped out, the sludge comes out by hand, the tank and heat exchanger get scrubbed, and then it is refilled, recharged and titrated. Cuda puts the reheat alone at about three hours. Two to three hours of hands-on work at a loaded technician wage is $70 to $105, and the washer is down for most of a shift either way.
Add it up and one change runs roughly $265 to $485. Six of those is $1,600 to $2,900 a year to keep a single 30 gallon washer in fluid. Those are example figures, built from published US detergent prices, published drum disposal rates and a loaded technician wage, and your own numbers will differ.
Cut six changes down to two or three and you leave $800 to $1,900 a year in the business. The first bath change you avoid pays for more than two years of tablets.
The second saving is maintenance. Sludge is what clogs filters, wears pumps and blocks nozzles. Keeping it digested holds spray pressure and cleaning consistency where they belong, and pushes filter changes further apart.
The tablet holds a live culture, so the bath has to be somewhere that culture can survive. Check these before you order.
Near-neutral aqueous degreasers pass all three routinely, and where they do, the tablets go in alongside the detergent you already buy. They are not a detergent and they do not replace one. The detergent lifts soil off the part, the microbes digest that soil inside the bath so it stops accumulating, and your brand, concentration and dosing stay as they are.
A hot tank runs 160 to 200 degrees F, and the powder in it holds the bath above pH 12. A heated spray cabinet is normally run at 160 to 180 F on similar alkaline chemistry. Ultrasonic baths usually sit at 130 to 160 F. All three are outside the temperature range, and the first two are outside the pH range as well. None of those conditions will support a live culture, ours or anyone else's.
If your shop runs a hot tank or a heated cabinet, the tablets still have a job, just not in that machine. They belong in the equipment around it: the sink washer on the bench, the parts soak tank, the oil water separator and the wash water holding tank downstream.
For a water based machine, you want an aqueous parts washer detergent at the concentration your machine calls for, plus a biological regenerator to stop the bath loading up. Do not put solvent in an aqueous machine, and do not expect parts washer soap on its own to keep a bath alive. Soap cleans the part. It does nothing about what comes off it.
Shops moving off mineral spirits usually do it for handling reasons: no flammable storage, no solvent fumes over the bench, no solvent hauling contract. An aqueous parts washer running a water based detergent solves all three, and gives up some speed on heavy baked grease, which is why most aqueous machines are heated and agitated.

Activity depends on conditions. Hold the bath between 45 and 120 degrees F, ideally 59 to 104, and pH 5 to 9.5, ideally 6 to 8. Very hot, strongly caustic or biocide-dosed baths will suppress the population.

The tablets are not a disinfectant or a sanitizer, and they are not registered for pesticidal use with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. No pesticidal, antimicrobial, disinfectant or sanitizing claims are made for them. They also do not make anyone compliant. Whether a spent bath meets a discharge permit, or how a waste gets classified, depends on your fluid, your contaminants and your local authority, and no additive changes that.
