The problem

Establishing uniform germination and early growth in turfgrass is challenging under intensive production systems, where inconsistent emergence and uneven early growth limit stand quality and delay establishment. In Mustang III turfgrass, weak rhizosphere biology and limited microbial activity were holding back germination rate and vegetative development under standard nutrition alone. The trial evaluated whether Multi-Tricho, a high-CFU OMRI Listed multi-strain Trichoderma inoculant of beneficial soil fungi, could improve germination and early growth compared to untreated controls, and whether higher application rates would deliver stronger performance. Treated and untreated plots were measured weekly for emergence uniformity, plant height, and stand consistency to isolate the Trichoderma inoculant as the differentiating input across the trial period.

Before, during, and after

Plots receiving only water and standard nutrition showed slower germination and reduced early growth across the Mustang III turfgrass trial. Turf emergence was less uniform, and overall plant height development lagged compared to treated areas, indicating limited rhizosphere biological activity during early establishment. Without supplemental microbial support in the root zone, the untreated turf relied solely on existing soil biology to drive germination and stand development, producing the baseline performance typical of intensive turf production but well short of what targeted Trichoderma colonization could deliver.

During
Weekly applications of Multi-Tricho significantly improved both germination rate and early growth compared to the untreated control. Treated plots demonstrated faster, more uniform turf establishment and increased plant height, with the higher application rate delivering the strongest performance, indicating a clear dose response across the trial. By enhancing root-zone biological activity and supporting early root development, the multi-strain Trichoderma inoculant improved stand consistency and early vigor in Mustang III turfgrass without changing the underlying fertility program. For sod producers, golf course superintendents, and athletic field managers running intensive turfgrass establishment programs, this trial demonstrates what an OMRI Listed multi-strain Trichoderma inoculant like Multi-Tricho can deliver on germination uniformity, stand consistency, and early growth under real production conditions.
